And now we continue with…
Black Horror Rising
African American horror films are much more than seeing more black faces and representation on film; it’s how we systematically define cultural norms in our community and what scares us. It goes much deeper than a simple summer camp, slasher, or monster movie, but these things affect how we live, move, and thrive in our communities amid the horrors of everyday life, like housing, gentrification, and the erasure of our history. It’s about remembering how far we’ve come, and knowing we still have so much work to do.
DAY #31
Movie: Sinners
Rotten Tomatoes: 97%
Starring: 💥 Michael B. Jordan 💥 Hailee Steinfeld 💥Miles Caton
Genre: Folk Horror, Supernatural, Vampires
SYNOPSIS: Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Michael B. Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back. [TRAILER]
“All money come with blood, baby.”
THOUGHTS: I saw this in theaters right after opening weekend, and it was fantastic then and still holds up now! The early trailers were pretty mysterious about what kind of horror we were getting into, and I appreciated that. It’s not until about 35 minutes in that the vampire element is revealed. I loved how the mystery unfolded, along with the electrifying performances. And I mean, come on…who doesn’t want more Michael B. on screen? Ummm, yes, please…(LOL) I truly saved the best for last, and absolutely check this out if you haven’t already, and even if you have… well, watch it again.
I hope you enjoyed Day #31 of this 31 Days of Halloween in movies. I’ll be taking a short break, and then I’ll wrap up September and this October series before we get to Thanksgiving prep. 🪦🧟🎃🐈⬛🕯️
