Welcome to the 31 Days of Halloween in Movies
Quote for Halloween
“Thank you for coming, but kindly remove your crazy asses from our holy ground.” – September House

Hello, friends, and welcome to Day #28 of the 31 Days of Halloween in Movies. We are almost there, and I hope you’ve enjoyed my series so far.
Yesterday, I asked if you’ve decorated for Halloween. Well, you already know I have! I was so jazzed about the season that I started decorating during the first week of October.
I struggled a bit with a theme this year, and somehow I’ve landed somewhere between Haunted Mansion and Witches’ Cottage. Maybe next year I’ll pull everything together into something a little more cohesive, but I also didn’t want to spend a fortune.

This year, I’ve only purchased Spanish moss, a few candle holders, paper moths, and real pumpkins. Everything else is what I already had, and I’m making it work!
Don’t forget to check out my Halloween games page for a few games, seasonal printables, and book lists.
And now we continue with…
Black Horror Rising
African American horror films are much more than seeing more black faces and representation on film; it’s how we systematically define cultural norms in our community and what scares us. It goes much deeper than a simple summer camp, slasher, or monster movie, but these things affect how we live, move, and thrive in our communities amid the horrors of everyday life, like housing, gentrification, and the erasure of our history. It’s about remembering how far we’ve come, and knowing we still have so much work to do.
DAY #28
Movie: Candyman (2021)
Rotten Tomatoes: 83%
Starring: 💥 Yahya Abdul-Mateen II 💥 Teyonah Parris 💥 Nathan Stewart-Jarrett
Genre: Psychological Horror, Psychological Thriller, Slasher
SYNOPSIS: For as long as residents can remember, the housing projects of Chicago’s Cabrini-Green neighborhood were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror. In the present day, Anthony’s (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) painting career is on the brink of stalling; a chance encounter with a Cabrini-Green old-timer (Colman Domingo) exposes Anthony to the tragically horrific nature of the true story behind Candyman. Anthony begins to explore these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for paintings, unknowingly opening a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifying wave of violence that puts him on a collision course with destiny. [TRAILER]
“Candyman ain’t a he. Candyman’s the whole damn hive.”
🧠 THOUGHTS: I’ve seen the original 1992 version of Candyman, which is equally disturbing and heartbreaking once you unravel the true story behind it. And, of course, there was the awful sequel (we won’t even go there). But this version, directed by Nia DaCosta, is truly eye-opening in its own right. It brings a fresh perspective to the story while keeping that same unsettling atmosphere. Definitely worth watching, even if you’re peeking through your fingers because let me tell you, 🪝 this shit is scary. (LOL)
I hope you enjoyed Day 28 of this 31 Days of Halloween in movies. Stay tuned for Day #29.
