Welcome to the 31 Days of Halloween in Movies
Quote for Halloween
“Nature is a haunted house–but Art–is a house that tries to be haunted.” — Emily Dickinson
Hello, friends, and welcome to Day #29 of the 31 Days of Halloween in Movies. We are almost there, and I hope you’ve enjoyed my series so far.
Don’t forget to check out my Halloween games page for a few games, seasonal printables, and book lists.
And now we continue with…
Black Horror Rising
African American horror films are much more than seeing more black faces and representation on film; it’s how we systematically define cultural norms in our community and what scares us. It goes much deeper than a simple summer camp, slasher, or monster movie, but these things affect how we live, move, and thrive in our communities amid the horrors of everyday life, like housing, gentrification, and the erasure of our history. It’s about remembering how far we’ve come, and knowing we still have so much work to do.
DAY #29
Movie: Nope
Rotten Tomatoes: 83%
Starring: 💥 Daniel Kaluuya 💥 Keke Palmer 💥 Brandon Perea
Genre: Alien Invasion, Monster Horror, Supernatural
SYNOPSIS: A man and his sister discover something sinister in the skies above their California horse ranch, while the owner of a nearby theme park tries to profit from the mysterious, otherworldly phenomenon. [TRAILER]
“Since the moment pictures could move, we had skin in the game.”
🧠 THOUGHTS: 👽🎥It wouldn’t be Halloween if I didn’t include a Jordan Peele movie! His signature blend of horror, African American satire, and social commentary is nicely done here. Throw in some familiar horror tropes, a little foolishness, and plenty of unsettling moments, and you’ve got a movie that’s anything but your typical horror flick. But that’s what makes Nope so impressive!
I hope you enjoyed Day #29 of this 31 Days of Halloween in movies. Stay tuned for Day #30 and your pre-Halloween pick.
