Updating Some Home Decor for the New Year!

Hello beautiful people! I’m so glad you landed here today.

Happy Friday everyone and welcome. This was a short busy week for me, and it’s been all about updates to list and committees and the usual office business.

The new year is always time to update our lifestyle choices by eating better, incorporating exercise, and working towards new goals. One of my goals is to own a home and will continue to work and save to achieve that goal.

Since I currently rent I always walk that fine line of what I will update in the home without spending too much money because some of these things I can’t take back (i.e., painting all the bathrooms or blinds). I’ve signed on to stay for a bit so now I’m ready to do a little more when it comes to fixtures and decor.

This time around I’m purposfully adding timeless items and not just what’s trending.  I’ll want these things to last for a while.  What’s also a bonus is that I can take them to the home I’ll eventually purchase.

Items 1-3

Grape Wood Branch – As simle as it sounds I’ve been looking for this item for some time. The West Elm version is pretty expensive.  I’ve tried thrift stores, and home stores with no luck so I’m hoping for find something within the next few weeks that’s priced right.

Arched Mirror – Last year I lucked-out and found a really nice mirror for my little entry, but I was really searching for an arched mirror.  I went to several thrift stores before I found the one I have currently, but my heart is set on this shape and style.  I will try a few more cheaper options before I decide to get this one.

Black Drawer Pulls – When I first moved in changing all the drawer pulls and knobs was an easy fix.  But now that I’ve lived with them for about a year I’m finding that the square drawer pulls catch me every time I bump into them So I’ve decided on this large round pull that still looks modern but great for a clumsy person like me.

Items 4-6

Home Monitoring System – This is an item that I would have never considered living in the high-rise building. However when your door opens to the outside, it’s one of those things that’s a must have in any home. After looking at several options Simpli Safe seemed to be the one that suited for my home. They carry serval different packages for just about any space.

Modern Lighting – When I first walked in to tour this house, the first thing I noted was that all the lighting was horrible. It was like stepping back through time… IT MUST GO!  However my wallet sang a different tune.  I did install new lighting in my daughters bathroom, and in both of our room closets.

Very soon I’m switching out the dining room light. It looks like something from outer space or should I say really 90s. I don’t know how this was something that someone thought was a good idea.    Initially I would have installed this when I moved in so I’ve been eyeing it for a while. Now since I’m staying it moves to the tippy-top of my list.

Windsor Dining Chairs – It’s said because these chairs are just a year old.  The all black farmhouse chairs were very trendy (they still are) but they are the most uncomfortable chairs EVER.  I also have to keep tightening them, so this time I want something that’s timeless and looks good.  These current chairs can go into storage for a breakfast room or rec room in the future house.

Items 7 & 8

Blanket Ladder – I’ve had a blanket ladder in each and every list I’ve created from as long as I can remember.  I don’t have the wall space downstairs but my bedroom is the perfect spot.  It’s a storage solution and a decor piece.  Thanks to a holiday gift card, this will arrive at the end of the month.

Braided Rug – This item is a pure “want”.  Why?  Because I want it. LOL. Another item that’s been in my wish list for a time, but it was too expensive to start out with.  We have wall-to-wall carpeting, and one thing I’ve learned in rentals is to add area rugs to protect the original rug.  Trust me it will save it from traffic stains.

I currently have a rug but it’s no longer my style or taste, so it’s time for something neutral, grown-up and new. It’s also way to big for my room so it’s been rolled up for a few months now, because I can’t sand the bunching.  It never lays flat.

Some additional items are:

Black-Out curtains for my daughters bedroom idential to mine, and for the dining room area because they help keep it cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Blinds for my room because the current ones that are still hanging are raggady.  (Note: Our first night here I pulled them up to clean the windows and they both came crashing down, why where they still here, and why didn’t the owner notice…who knows)

Vertical blinds for the living room.  I point out they something was wrong with them to the owner and his reponse was “I don’t see anything wrong”…R-i-g-h-t… I knew that meant I was on my own. There are two knots tied in the cord to hold them together, they don’t open and close properly and there are several gaps in between.

I know my list is small, but this is as it should be, because I want a space that’s stylish and functional. No matter where you live or what your situation is you should make your space your own (within reason).
