Good Reads Challenge Book Review: The Verifiers

Hello out there, it’s a beautiful day to have a beautiful day!

“The power to predict outcomes is inextricably linked to the power to control outcomes.”
– Verifiers

It’s Wednesday, the midpoint in route to a glorious weekend.  I hope you’re doing well, taking care of your body as well as your mind, drinking plenty of water, and checking in with friends and family.

Thanks to Audible and Libby, I’ve been listening to books at a break-neck pace.  According to Good Reads, I’m six books ahead of schedule, but it also means that I’m [really] behind on adding my reviews here.  So now I’m playing catch-up.

Today I’m reviewing The Verifiers by Jane Pek.  This book was a different read for me. Not horror, but a mystery novel full of surprises that were just the break I needed in between.

Synopsis

Claudia Lin is used to disregarding her fractious family’s model-minority expectations: she has no interest in finding either a conventional career or a nice Chinese boy. She’s also used to keeping secrets from them, such as that she prefers girls—and that she’s just been stealth-recruited by Veracity, a referrals-only online-dating detective agency.

My Rating & Review  (☆☆☆.50)

Claudia Lin (the protagonist) loves mysteries and, after playing the online game “Murder Most Foul,” was recruited by a company called Veracity, which was a referral-only agency specializing in verifying people that clients would meet in dating apps online. Claudia’s mother doesn’t know she quit her cushy corporate job, set up by her brother to become a verifier. Her mother wants her to marry a nice Chinese boy, but Claudia hasn’t come out.

from Verifiers
“It made me believe there was something to be solved, and I was the only one who could solve it. .”

Things would go awry when a client misses their scheduled appointment with Claudia, and she finds out they’ve been murdered. Claudia also learned that the dead client’s sister had been impersonating her on several dating apps. So, when she dies, she reaches out to Claudia for help.

Claudia begins to investigate what happened to her client even though her bosses have advised her against it. However, when one of Claudia’s bosses (Becks) comes across some inconsistencies, she teams up with Claudia to investigate the case and discover what happened.

from The Verifiers
“If this were a novel, he might simply be a poorly written character. But there are no poorly written people. Only ones you don’t yet understand.”

There’s nothing like a whodunnit mystery with some twists and turns as we find out what happened and the events that led up to the murdered client.
