The Review

(CONTAINS “LIGHT” SPOILERS) / The Chestnut Man is a crime novel about the abuse of the system. A system designed to help the helpless of all … children. Halloween, 1989 and a gruesome murder set the trajectory of what would become The Chestnut Man. This novel is not for those who don’t like crime, mystery, or true crime, and as a result, it depicts graphic scenes.

“If you find a little chestnut man, he’s already found you”. The killer stalks his victims through the system to right the neglect and abuse of his childhood. Could these killings be connected to one person? Accusations, of the wrongfully accused, and everyone is a suspect. What is the killer’s true objective?

I enjoy mystery and crime novels, and I didn’t know what to expect. I was excited to read this book, as the author (Søren Sveistrup) is the creator of the television series “The Killing” which ran on AMC in 2011. The characters were interesting, in their many facets and gave a broader perspective on the mystery surrounding the events.

Subsequently, the authorities in most crime novels follow the same guidelines. In other words, they’re bright, always two steps behind, tired of the system, and working the case without all the information.

Overworked agents trying to put the pieces together, while the Commissioner of the department just wants everything resolved.  However, two detectives who are constantly challenging the evidence. They know that a quick rush to judgment can prove deadly when you’re trying to catch a killer.

Above all this book kept me guessing from beginning to end, and if you enjoy a thriller … set in the fall, The Chestnut Man is a good read.

My current read changed this time around because I didn’t want to go from one crime novel to the next, therefore I’m taking a break and reading a YA Fantasy novel.
