“I wish we could put up some of the Christmas spirit in jars and open a jar of it every month.” — Harlan Miller

Hello, my friends.  I hope you are doing well, knocking out your tasks, taking care of your body and mind, and checking in with friends and family this season.

My Christmas tree has gone through so many styling iterations that it could make your head spin. Decorating it has been a BIG deal for me since I was 13, and it’s still one of the traditions I take the most pride in. It brings me genuine joy. Each year, I add something new or experiment with a different approach because my style is constantly evolving.

In the beginning (the dawn of man… LOL), I would head to Macy’s the day after Christmas and scoop up several ornaments. The look was classic—heavy on the glitter, heavy on the red, and filled with anything beautiful enough to earn a spot on my tree, but never anything too faddish. My mom loves angels, so I followed suit, and for many years, that angel-inspired tree was my holiday signature.

Then I spotted an all-black tree—before it was even a thing. Unfortunately, it was way too expensive to swap out every single ornament. I tried making a few of my own, but they never actually made it onto the tree. For a few years, my ornaments leaned almost entirely white, and anything red I owned stayed carefully wrapped and tucked away.

Fast forward to now: I still wanted black, just layered with other tones. Over the last couple of years, I’ve leaned into a moodier tree, and for the most part, I’m keeping it that way—heavy on dark hues, anchored with black and brown.

That said, I still love all kinds of holiday tree styles. So I wanted to share my take on a few favorites: Classic, Glam, and Moody.

THE CLASSIC TREE

Filled with whimsical ornaments and plenty of red, the Classic Tree leans into tradition. Think timeless pieces mixed with a bit of nostalgia. I stuck with classic ornaments for this look, but these days, “classic” can mean whatever tickles your fancy—there’s no shortage of options to make it your own.

Red Sweater  (it also comes in white)
Glitter Holly Ball
Mercury Glass Snowman
Bullion Tassell
Beaded Nutcracker
Winter Scene Ornament
Felt Wool Mouse
Red Velvet Ornament … Michaels or Amazon

THE GLAM TREEE

It’s not my style, but it’s beautiful nonetheless, filled with gold and white, with ribbon and jewels.

Mirror Glass Tree Topper
Velvet Gold Ball
Cocktail Ornament
Teardrop Gold Bronze Ornament
Jewel Teardrop
Glitter Stripped Ornament
Gold and Glass Ornament
Handblown Amber Ornament

A MOODY (RUSTIC) CHRISTMAS

I love moody, rustic holiday décor—the warm golds, deep, dark tones, and beautifully imperfect ornaments that make it feel as if the tree belongs to another time, rich with history and quiet magic.

To make this look really rich, add in some red or wine ribbon.

Nutcracker Frame
Green Bobble
Vintage Glass Pear
Reval Paper Ornament
Pinecone Ornament
Farmhouse Ball Ornament
Verdigris Tree
Textured Ball
