What Are You Reading This Month!

Hello Friends and welcome to the blog today!

How are you, friends?  I hope everyone is doing well on this wonderful Wednesday.  Fresh off my holiday weekend (I took Friday off) I feel rested and refreshed.  Work has been more stressful, but I’m making a promise to myself that I won’t let my feelings about work bleed into other things.

With that said I’m getting on with my Good Reads Challenge, and I’m here today with another book review.  Typically I don’t read two books at once however, this summer my daughter and I have this pseudo book club. We are reading (together) The Mother of Black Hollywood: A Memoir by Jennifer Lewis, and I just started a new book.  The Whisper Man.

I really enjoyed this book, and I would recommend it as it’s a perfect short read for the summer. This story could have easily been a move for me.  It was cheeky fun, and I enjoyed the lightheartedness of it.  The banter between the characters and her awkwardness was refreshing.  The fact that she was a regular person who feels what most people feel was relatable.

Review

This is a story about Nora Seed.  Nora’s life is in freefall, and she feels like it’s not worth living.  She has regrets about her mother’s death, she just got fired from her job, and there is resentment from her brother (Joe) about splitting up the band they started because it was too much pressure.  She broke off her engagement with her fiancée and fell short of pursuing an Olympic dream of swimming.

Nora’s life is filled with what other people wanted her to be.  She wasn’t living life for herself, and to top it all off her cat just died.  Nora decided that since no one needed her that she would take her own life.

But as she drifted into her final hours Nora would awaken between life and death in what’s called … The Midnight Library.  In the Midnight Library, Nora would have the chance to look at all her past regrets and work through them by living all the lives she deemed worthy.

However every time Nora enters a new life, remnants of her old life have been altered or removed. Nora longs for things in her old life, that she took for granted, and soon realizes there is no Midnight Library once she realizes she wants to live.

Jenifer Lewis keeps it real in this provocative and touching memoir by a mid-western girl with a dream whose journey from poverty to Hollywood will move, shock, and inspire readers.

Told in the audacious voice her fans adore, Jenifer describes a road to fame made treacherous by dysfunction and undiagnosed mental illness, including a sex addiction. Yet, supported by loving friends and strengthened by “inner soldiers,” Jenifer never stopped entertaining and creating.

We watch as Jenifer develops icon status stemming from a series of legendary screen roles as the sassy, yet loveable, mama or auntie. And we watch as her emotional disturbances, culminating in a breakdown while filming The Temptations movie, launch her on a continuing search for answers, love, and healing.
