I hope everyone is doing well as we head into another weekend.  It’s going to be a low-key weekend as I get into some much-needed TV binging (LOL), and try to put a significant dent in my current book.  It’s been 30-days since my J & J vaccine and I’m here to tell you that all is well, and I feel good.

It feels good to get back to my reading schedule, and I’ve been updating my Good Reads Challenge for this year.  My shows are ending or will be ending soon, and I just like not being committed to having to turn on the TV except for when I choose.  Today I’m reviewing my last read Final Girls by Riley Sager, and I’ve also started The Midnight Library, by Matt Haig.

Review of Final Girls: A Novel

Ok, I know everyone says this, but this book really took me by surprise.  I absolutely loved the flow of the book. It was almost Halloween-esq (or like most slasher flicks) as it went from the present day, and then back to what happened on that night.  This story would go deeper into the life of a Final Girl.

The Story

It begins with a group of college friends away for the weekend in a cabin in the woods. (Sound familiar)  The book sets up the personalities of all the characters, as we get a glimpse into their actions on that final night.  They make one mistake by letting a stranger join the party, and hours later everything would change with one survivor and an outcome that takes the reader by surprise.

This story focuses on 3 final girls and goes into what happens to these women after they narrowly escape a massacre and how they move on with their lives. But someone is out to get them.  Quincy (our main character) has blocked this horrible incident from her memory.  She can’t remember anything from that night which makes her friends and family question whether or not she had anything to with the terrible tragedy that befell her 6 friends. 

The Present

She finds solace in her life of living with her lawyer boyfriend, baking, and running her blog.  All would seem normal until a stranger (another Final Girl) enters her life, and little by little would break down the barriers that Quincy has created.  Sam (the other final girl) tries to get Quincy to open up to remember that night.  We follow Quincy as she tries to find herself, and question everything she has come to know about that night.

From the beginning, there was some tension between Quincy and the cop named Coop who saved her that night.  He was the one she would call at a moment’s notice whenever she felt like her world was crashing.  Right in the middle of the story, I found myself thinking that Quincy (the main) character broke from reality and killed all her friends because things just were not adding up. 

The boyfriend was also suspect, but I felt their relationship was more out of healing and convenience than someone she truly loved. By this point, I had so many questions but I pressed on because I was approaching a climax moment at the point where Quincy broke and all the memories from that night came flooding back.

I found this book to be a good read.  Once I got through about half of the book, I steamed through the rest as I couldn’t put it down.  Not graphic, but a suspenseful page-turner, that kept me guessing until the very end.
