Wednesday: I Have Arrived!

Yo party people … Happy Wednesday! Welcome to the blog.

First things first … if you are new to Life by Wyetha “Welcome”.  I hope you stay awhile and consider subscribing or hit that “like” button. If you’re part of the family … Welcome back.

Yes-yes y’all … I’m here!  Moving was a beast.  I moved in a few stages because of course, it seemed like everything was done, and yet nothing was done … all at the same time.  Fatigue kept me from getting back to the blog or doing anything but taking down more trash and trying to acclimate to my new surroundings.

My experience with my old landlord left me with a real salty taste, so I’m at the point where I just want to push out all those negative feelings and move on.

“You can spend minutes, hours, days, weeks, or even months over-analyzing a situation; trying to put the pieces together, justifying what could’ve, would’ve happened … or you can just leave the pieces on the floor and move the f— on.”― Tupac Shakur

A UP-Cycle Project During the Chaos?

Okay so not a new project, but one that started in the beginning stages of packing because then I was hopeful, and it was all … unicorns and rainbows.

I decided to update another piece of IKEA furniture because let’s face it.  It’s inexpensive and not half bad.  As I mentioned before that in my “youth” I was going through a red phase, so I wanted to UP-cycle this fire-engine-red … high gloss KALLAX Shelf Unit to white.  (They don’t even sell that color anymore…what was I thinking, LOL).

Before

After watching several YouTube videos on repainting furniture I felt confident and ready to tackle “the beast”.  Here’s what I did.

Supplies

Supplies

This “Project”

♦ Wiped down the unit with all-purpose cleaner
♦  Taped off the wheels
♦  Laid my drop cloth to protect my surrounding

prime

♦ Primed with the Bulls Eye primer use a small roller and a paint brush. (3 coats)

Wyetha Note:  The YouTube video I used for a guide recommended to sand in between the coats of primer, but what he didn’t say is that if your priming over high-gloss paint, you’re going to sand off what you just painted if you do this in between coats.

I did sand where the finish wasn’t as smooth, but I could have omitted that step all together.  That step works best on wood your repainting vs something with an impenetrable surface like high-glass lacquer.

paint

♦  Let dry for 1 day
♦  Spray painted the unit (2 coats) … let dry 48 hours
♦  Wiped down with a dry cloth
♦  3 coats of polycrylic using a soft brush

I never got a chance to add my floor tile as for the top surface because my unit became storage while I was packing to move.

We will call this Phase 1, because as we speak I’m still using it for storage in the new place until I get more of my boxes unpacked.  So my record albums will have to wait a bit longer before I put them in place.

Done

Minus a few drips, and some areas that I couldn’t go back an correct, this little cube shelf turned out pretty good, and the surface is smooth.  I even had boxes sitting on top and no scratches, so I’m impressed.

The next step is styling and if I move everything that it currently houses to it’s real purpose I’ll be able to style this little cube so it can be more efficient.

With that I’ll close out my blog post today.  Thanks so much for taking the time to visit, and I’ll see you back here on Friday. — Peace.
